The society history goes way back to 1982 and one child; Malini Alur. The mother of this child; Mrs. Meethu Alur sowed the seed for existing Organization on the land which was provided to the Society by the Government of Karnataka, India. The scope of health welfare services provided has grown over time and the Organization currently has multiple centers. The Organization provides health welfare services to over 1,300 children with developmental disabilities annually.
A Dental Public Health seminar was held at the Society on Saturday May 12, 2012. The main objectives were to enhance the dental health awareness among children of the Society and to promote good oral hygiene. The Society enrollment is approximately 200 children. Some 54 children participated in the Dental Public Health seminar.
A group of three volunteers; Thangamani.R, Vishnu Shankar and Rekha.K.K introduced the Dental Public Health Program and Seminar objectives. Two dentists; namely Asha Prakash ([email protected]) and Aneesha Bhol ([email protected]) also participated. The Society staff K.A Chari,Priya Rao and Rabindran Isaac were helpful in enabling the program.
The dentists initiated the Dental Health Program with a small presentation about the oral hygiene. The presentation demonstrated how to brush teeth and how to use dental floss to clean teeth. Oral health and the importance of a healthy diet were also discussed. The presentation remained interesting and effective based on the responses as well as the reactions among the children.
The Seminar continued with the presentation of visual elements. The first visual element was the Power Point entitled: Training for the Oral Hygiene and Dental Education Program. The Power Point was followed by a viewing of the Dental Education Program videos entitled: The Berenstain Bears Visit the Dentist by Stan and Jan Berenstain. These visual elements were the highlight of the Seminar. We could see all the kids laughing but also thinking about oral health at the same time.
The presentations were followed by a questions & answer session. The aims of the question & answer session were to allow children to reflect on their experience as well as relate newly acquired knowledge.
Representative questions included:
How many times a day should a person brush? asked dentist Asha Prakash? One kid replied that he had to brush 10 times and this caused a spontaneous outburst of laughter. Brushing after meals was recommended by the dentist.
How should we brush asked dentist Aneesha Bhol? Many children answered up and down. The dentist explained again that teeth are best brushed with small circles. All the students followed the dentists in brushing with small circles.
Dentist Asha Prakash and Aneesha Bhol also spoke of tooth decay as well as oral infections and emphasized good oral hygiene. During this portion of the presentation the children’s eyes were wide open. Some children were scared when looking at the pictures of tooth decay and oral infections. The students were advised to prevent tooth decay as well as infection situations by caring for their teeth regularly.
Dental kits including a toothbrush and tooth paste were distributed to each child present. The children were guided in a brushing tooth paste application as well as brushing exercise to demonstrate good practice.
A number of funny incidents occurred. Typical cases were those of a student blaming their neighbors on never or seldom brushing. Many students had questions on what to do after eating foods like chocolate. One of the children asked about how to use an electronic brush.
Finally we distributed the feedback / comment forms to the children. These forms were circulated to survey the children’s understanding as well as to elicit observations of the Dental Public Health program. One physically as well as mentally challenged child; Gowtham gave a vote of thanks expressing his appreciation.
