Periodontal disease
The set of conditions that lead to damage of gums, fibers and teeth holding bones, is called periodontal disease. Periodontal disease usually starts with the onset of gingivitis of the gums. The action of bacteria in the mouth leads to the slow erosion of the gums around the teeth. The erosion causes the teeth to get progressively more and more separated from the grip of the gums. This separation causes fissures to develop between the gums and the teeth. Food particles get embedded inside these fissures. Continuing bacteria breeding in these fissures means that bacteria gets close to the tissues and bones which hold the teeth together. Over a period of time, bacteria inside the gum fissures reach the oral bones and begin weakening the hold of the bones on the teeth. This is the worst stage of periodontal disease. The weak bones and gums cannot hold the teeth. The extraction of the affected tooth becomes an unavoidable option.
Periodontal disease follows many stages to reach the stage of advanced infection. Gingivitis is usually the first stage, followed by the preliminary stage then the intense stage and finally the advanced stage of the disease, which calls for the removal of teeth.
Periodontal disease treatments depend upon the intensity of the disease. If the disease is not very severe, adopting a good oral routine and scaling of the teeth and gums by a dentist can control the disease and restore health to the affected part. A more intense level the disease calls for more serious effort. Upon the examination of a dentist, the stage of periodontal disease can be decided. In cases of advanced periodontal disease, regenerative surgery may be necessary. A dentist performs a regenerative treatment to stimulate the growth of lost bones and tissues. Advanced stages of periodontal disease are usually handled by dentists who have have specialized training in periodontics.
